Senate Majority Leader Introduces Repeal of Prevailing Wage

Jan 20, 2017

This week, the Senate began introducing legislation for the new legislative term.  The first three bills aim to repeal Michigan’s prevailing wage law.  The first bill was introduced by Senate Majority Leader Arlan Meekhof (R-West Olive), showing the importance of the proposal by the Senate Republican Leadership.

Current state law requires that all construction firms deployed to a government worksite pay employees union scale wages, something which the Majority Leader feels costs taxpayers, schools, and local communities millions of dollars each year.  Currently, there are twenty states that do not have a prevailing wage law.

The bill package has been referred to the Senate Michigan Competitiveness Committee for consideration.
