Senate Approves Gas Tax Holiday

Mar 18, 2022

Under legislation headed to Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Michigan’s gas and diesel taxes would be suspended for six months. House Bill 5570 would suspend the 27.2 cents per gallon tax from April 1 through September 30. However, the Senate failed to get the two-thirds vote necessary for immediate effect, if the governor signs it into law, the gas tax holiday wouldn’t occur until 90 days following sine die this December.

It’s estimated the six-month holiday would cost the State of Michigan $750 million in lost revenue and would save the average motorist $75. The bill will be sent to Governor Whitmer for her consideration, however, given her recent statements it is likely she will veto the bill.
