How can Michigan become a leader in transparency and accountability and restore the public’s trust in government? This week, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson shared her ideas on how Michigan could accomplish those goals. Her plan includes working with the legislature toward full disclosure of all money in politics through revising reporting requirements and closing loopholes and exceptions. Additionally, Secretary Benson would like to see FOIA expanded to include the governor and the legislature and require financial disclosures from elected officials.
During Sunshine Week, beginning March 10, Secretary Benson will announce a series of actions that she, and her department, will take to implement changes in the areas of disclosure, ethics, and transparency. She will also participate in town halls throughout the state to get input from Michigan residents.
Sunshine Week was launched in 2005 by the American Society of News Editors as a call to action for freedom of information and open government.
