School Safety Reforms Introduced

Mar 15, 2019

Public schools would be required to carry trauma kits and train all staff members on how to use the kits under legislation introduced this week. Representative Jeff Yaroch (R-Richmond) and Representative Angela Witwer (D-Delta Twp.) introduced the package with the hopes of improving school safety practices in Michigan. This bill is part of the Department of Homeland Security’s “Stop the Bleed” national campaign to help improve survival from life-threatening bleeding.

Additionally, the bills would call for an annual appropriation from the Michigan Department of Education to grant funds to high schools interested in purchasing Automated External Defibrillators. The first bill was referred to the House Education Committee, while the bill for the purchase of AED’s was referred to the House Appropriations Committee.
