This week, the Senate Judiciary Committee reported a package of six bills that seeks to increase safety for all motorists and cyclists in the state. The legislation requires motorists to allow five feet of distance when passing a cyclist on either the left or right side, it would crack down on districted driving, and would require one hour of driver’s education training on road safety.
Testifying before the committee in support of the proposal were survivors of the June 7, 2016 cyclist-pickup collision in Kalamazoo that left five cyclists dead.
The legislation has been sent to the Senate floor for consideration.
