Renewable Energy Systems Exempt from Property Taxes

Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed legislation that reinstates the property tax exemption for renewable energy systems that was previously in effect. The bills allow for the exemption from personal property taxes as long as the renewable energy system offsets all or a portion of the energy use for the property and produce less than 150 kilowatts. Additionally, the package excludes residential solar panels from being considered as true cash value under real property tax during a tax assessment.
