Removing a Public Official from Office

Oct 26, 2018

Should the governor have to move promptly when considering a request to remove an elected official from office? Representatives Jeff Yaroch (R-Richmond) and Steve Marino (R-Harrison Twp.) announced their plan that would require the governor’s office to promptly decide when anyone makes a formal request for the removal of an elected official due to gross neglect or corruption. Under the legislation, if a Michigan resident submits a written request for the removal of an elected official to the governor, the governor would have 60 days to review the request and notify the requester of his or her determination.

The legislators introduced the proposal in response to a situation in their local communities.

Following an 18-count federal indictment, Macomb Township officials sent a letter to Governor Rick Snyder requesting the removal of Macomb Township Trustee Dino Bucci. However, they haven’t yet received a response from the governor. According to the bill sponsors, Mr. Bucci hasn’t appeared at a Macomb Township Board meeting since his indictment, but continues to collect a salary.

The legislation has been referred to the House Elections and Ethics Committee for consideration.
