Regional Transit Proposal Moves Forward

Aug 05, 2016

This week, a deal was reached amongst stakeholders that would place a proposal before Southeast Michigan voters in November to raise funds to increase public transportation in the region.  The millage before voters would be a twenty-year plan and 1.2 mills, costing the average house less than $100 per year.  In addition to the $3 billion raised through the millage, the area would be eligible for federal and state funding.

The legislature had previously worked to provide a plan and partial funding for regional transit in the area, “After prior failed attempts to pass legislation that would have laid out a plan and provided a portion of the funding, stakeholders in Southeast Michigan decided to bring the plan to the local level.  Now voters in four counties within the area will decide if a regional transportation system is created,” stated Tim Ward of MLC.
