Redistricting Commission Receives High Number of Applications

Apr 17, 2020

Thus far, the Department of State has processed 4,322 notarized applications to serve on the Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission. The state is on track this week to surpass the number of final submissions processed by California when it launched a similar commission, despite having a population nearly quadruple that of Michigan.

The department has shared a document detailing who is applying to the commission, broken down by demographics such as race, gender, and age. Highlights include:

    • Oakland County has the highest number of applications at 765, followed by Wayne County at 508
    • 50% of applicants have no political affiliation, while 35% identify as Democratic, and 15% as Republican
    • Residents 65 and older make up 42% of applicants, in sharp contrast those between the ages of 17 and 24 who make up only 2% of applicants

Applications are being accepted until June 1, 2020. While they require notarization, that can now be done electronically. For more information, please visit RedistrictingMichigan.org.
