The first 1,000 completed and notarized applications to serve on the first-ever Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission have been received and processed by the Michigan Department of State. The commission of 13 randomly selected applicants will have exclusive authority to adopt boundaries in Michigan for the State Senate, State House, and U.S. Congress. It was created through a ballot initiative on the 2018 general election ballot.
The State has brought on temporary staff to help process the applications that are pending review, while more applications continue to be received before the June 1, 2020 deadline. Applications were mailed to 250,000 randomly selected voters on December 30, 2019. Additionally, interested residents who did not receive an application through the random mailing can fill one out online at RedistrictingMichigan.org.
Following the June 1 deadline, 200 semifinalists will be randomly selected from the pool, sixty of whom must be affiliated with the Democratic Party, 60 with the Republican Party, and 80 must not affiliate with either party. Half of those semifinalists must be recipients of the random mailing. The final commission will be comprised of four voters who affiliate with the Democratic Party, four with the Republican Party, and five who do not affiliate with either major party. The commission must adopt a redistricting plan by November 1, 2021.
