This week, the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) announced the municipalities awarded grant by the DEQ to boost their recycling education and infrastructure projects. The $500,000 in grants support Governor Rick Snyder’s 2014 Residential Recycling Plan of Action by increasing access to recycling, improving recycling processing capacity, and promoting recycling education in Michigan. Funding for the grant was made available through a State of Michigan general fun appropriation in the 2017 Fiscal Year.
Recycling education will be increased through projects including billboards, public service announcement messaging, internet and social media campaigns, printed outreach materials, direct education events, and school programs.
Access to recycling and processing capacity will be increased though the funding of infrastructure projects such as the purchase of recycling processing equipment, site expansions and improvements, and the development of new recycling collection sites.
