Public Body Virtual Hearing Allowance Set to Expire

Mar 26, 2021

The authority for public bodies to hold virtual meetings, without reason, is set to expire next week, on March 31. The allowance to hold virtual meetings came in response to the pandemic and was passed by the legislature and signed into law last December. Under Michigan’s Open Meetings Act, public bodies must operate in a manner that allows the public to attend meetings.  Under state law, a public body is any state and local governing body, which includes boards, commissions, committee, and councils. Without action, all public bodies will have to return to in-person meetings beginning April 1.
