Providing Opportunity

Oct 19, 2016

Goodwill Industries of Greater Detroit, a non-profit organization providing employment and education opportunities to Metro Detroiters, sought to expand its recycling program by opening jobs to the prison diversion and job training program. MLC’s work enabled Goodwill to build meaningful relationships with state legislators and staffers who are now open to discussions on the organization’s subsequent efforts. In the end, Goodwill received a $2.5 million appropriation, allowing for the creation of more than 400 new jobs in Metro Detroit.

How MLC provided opportunity:

After the government found the prisoner release system in Michigan to be drastically underperforming, Goodwill saw this as an opportunity to expand jobs and serve groups whose lives needed help getting back on track. Goodwill was able to secure part of the funding through federal and foundation grants, but still required appropriations from the state.   MLC helped by finding the right legislator who would lead Goodwill’s proposal to its success. With MLC’s help in passing the bill, the state is now saving considerable money by lowering prison costs and boosting the economy because of the opportunities Goodwill’s program has provided for this group.
