Providing Opportunity

Oct 05, 2016

Graduation Alliance, a private firm based in Salt Lake City, Utah provides students who have dropped out of school due to personal set-backs, with alternative education methods. The Graduation Alliance sought assistance from MLC to help them propose a monthly count date for returning out-of-school youth. With unevenly-weighted count days for Michigan’s public schools, drop-out students were not funded if they were not present for Fall count. This directly affected the funding that the school districts received for these students. MLC worked with the Graduation Alliance to propose a monthly count date ultimately granting schools more funding to work with Graduation Alliance.

How MLC provided opportunity:

MLC demonstrated to the Michigan Department of Education that the Graduation Alliance’s Dropout Recovery Program would be a valuable way to provide education services to students that were unable to meet the traditional education model. Legislation that altered the count day process was passed within 14 months of MLC engaging with Graduation Alliance-10 months ahead of the planned timeframe. The new legislation provided an avenue for Graduation Alliance to work with school districts to secure the funding needed to implement a Dropout Recovery Program. Graduation Alliance has experienced tremendous success, re-engaging 80 percent of all out-of-school youth for the districts they support.
