Programs Launching to Help Future Educators

Oct 28, 2022

A program aimed at hiring more teachers in the state was announced this week. Funded through the FY23 state budget, the funding creates two programs. The first, MI Future Educator Fellowship, provides $10,000 scholarships to aspiring teachers to help lower the cost of tuition and fees and is renewable for up to three years. Students that receive the award must commit to teaching in Michigan classrooms for at least three years after graduation. To be eligible, a person must be working toward their first teacher certification, start teacher training in the fall of 2022 or later, earn a 3.0 GPA or higher, and be a Michigan resident. For more information on this program, please click here.

The second program, the MI Future Educator Stipend, provides a compensation for full-time student teachers. Starting fall 2022, student teachers can earn $9,600 while they complete their final semester(s) of teacher preparation. To be eligible a person must be participating full time in required student teaching coursework in Michigan and be unpaid by their local district.
