Primary Election Results for 109th House District

Aug 11, 2017

The 109th House district seat has been vacant since May following the death of Representative John Kivela (D-Marquette). Sara Cambensy (D), a city commissioner, won the Democratic nomination in the special primary election held Tuesday. Cambensy had previously lost to Kivela in the 2016 primary, but beat out three other candidates this time around. She was victorious by just 300 votes.

The Republican nomination went to Rich Rossway, the only republican running for the seat. The 109th House district, which includes Ishpeming, Marquette, and Negaunee, has a 56.2% Democratic base. The general election will be held in November, with Cambensy expected to come out on top.
