Through the general election on November 6, on the MLC Blog we will be highlighting races for which due to the voter base the seat could be won by either the Democratic or Republican candidate. Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.
Commentary
U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow is running for a fourth term in office, having first been elected to this seat in 2000. Prior to that, Republican Senator Spencer Abraham held the seat for six years, and before that Dems held the seat from 1959-1995. Since her first election to this seat, she has gained more votes each cycle; in 2000 she won 49.5%-48%, in 2006 57%-41%, and in 2012 she won 59%-38%. Will she continue her streak and have gains this year, or is this the year the Republicans will flip this seat? President Donald Trump endorsed Republican candidate John James in the primary, which may have helped him in that race, but will it help or hurt in during the general election?
