General Election Overview: 8th U.S. House District

Through the general election on November 6, on the MLC Blog we will be highlighting races for which due to the voter base the seat could be won by either the Democratic or Republican candidate. Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

District Overview

The 8^th US House District includes Ingham and Livingston Counties and a portion of Oakland County.

Commentary

Republican Congressman Mike Bishop is running for his third term in office. While the district has a 56% Republican base, it covers a rapidly politically changing Oakland County and the more liberal leaning university town of East Lansing, this race is seen by insiders as competitive. In the presidential election, the vote was split 50% to 43% in favor of Trump.

Democratic Candidate:

Elissa Slotkin – Runs a consulting business, former CIA Middle East analyst, worked at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the State Department, and the Defense Department. She held positions under both Presidents Bush and Obama.

Republican Candidate:

Mike Bishop – Congressman, former Michigan Senate Majority leader, attorney, former professor at Thomas M. Cooley Law School, former member of the Michigan House of Representatives.

Libertarian Candidate:

Brian Ellison – Army Veteran, commercial construction estimator
