Through the primary election on August 7, on every Tuesday and Thursday on the MLC Blog we will be highlighting races for which the primary is the key race due to the voter base. Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

District Overview

The 8^th U.S. House District includes Ingham County, Livingston County, and Oakland County.

Commentary

This year, Congressman Mike Bishop will be seeking his third term in office. While there are primary races on both sides of the aisle, the real story for this seat will be during the general election this November as many key political insiders have named this district as one to watch.

Democratic Candidates:

Elissa Slotkin – Consultant, former CIA Middle East analyst, previously worked at the White House, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, and the State Department and served as Acting Assistant Secretary of Defense.
Chris Smith – University professor

Republican Candidates:

Congressman Mike Bishop – Congressman, former Michigan Senate Majority Leader and state Representative, attorney
Lokesh Kumar – Small business owner

Libertarian Candidate:

Brian Ellison – US Army Veteran, former manager for a disaster restoration company, construction superintendent
