General Election Overview: 7th U.S. House District

Aug 17, 2018

Through the general election on November 6, on the MLC Blog we will be highlighting races for which due to the voter base the seat could be won by either the Democratic or Republican candidate.  Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

District Overview

The 7th Congressional District is located in Southcentral and Southeast Michigan. It includes the counties of Branch, Eaton, Hillsdale, Jackson, Lenawee, Monroe, and a portion of Washtenaw County.

Commentary

Republican Congressman Tim Walberg has served in this seat since 2007, with the exception of 2009-2010, when Democratic Congressman Mark Schauer held the seat. The district has a 58% Republican base. While the Democrats have tried to flip the seat since they lost it in 2011, the numbers seem to favor Congressman Walberg winning re-election.

Democratic Candidate:

  • Gretchen Driskell – Former State Representative, former Mayor of Saline and Saline City Council member, accountant

Republican Candidate:

  • Congressman Tim Walberg – He is serving his 5th term in office. Prior to that, he was a pastor and worked at Warren Reuther Center for Education and Community Impact and Moody Bible Institute. Additionally, he served in the Michigan House from 1983 to 1999. Congressman Walberg holds a bachelor’s degree from Taylor University and a master’s degree from Wheaton College.
