General Election Overview: 6th U.S. House District

Aug 16, 2018

Through the general election on November 6, on the MLC Blog we will be highlighting races for which due to the voter base the seat could be won by either the Democratic or Republican candidate.  Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

District Overview

The 6th Congressional District is located in Southwest Michigan. It includes the counties of Berrien, Cass, Kalamazoo, St. Joseph, Van Buren, and a portion of Allegan County.

Commentary

Republican Congressman Fred Upton has served in this seat since 1987. The district has a 57% Republican base and Congressman Upton tends to garner more of the votes than Republican candidates for other offices do in this seat. But nevertheless, Democrats will try to make a run for this moderate seat.

Democratic Candidate:

  • Matt Longjohn – Physician, former National Health Officer for YMCA

Republican Candidate:

  • Congressman Fred Upton – He’s served in this seat since first being elected in 1986. Prior to his time in office, he worked for President Ronald Reagan in the Office of Management and Budget. Congressman Upton holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Michigan.
