Primary Election Overview: 6th Senate District

Through the primary election on August 7, on every Tuesday and Thursday on the MLC Blog we will be highlighting races for which the primary is the key race due to the voter base. Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

District Overview

The 6^th Senate District is in Wayne County. It includes Belleville, Flat Rock, Huron Township, Rockwood, Romulus, Sumpter Township, Taylor, Van Buren Township, Westland, and a portion of Brownstown Township. The district has a 60% Democratic base and the Democratic party is all but assured to keep this seat in November.

Commentary

After serving two terms, Democratic Senator Hoon-Yung Hopgood is term limited from running for reelection. Two current Democratic State Representatives are vying for this seat in the primary race. Representative Geiss has served two terms in the House, forgoing a third term to run for this open seat. Representative Kosowski served three terms in the House and can’t run again in the House due to term limits.

Erika Geiss – State Representative, former community college teacher
Robert Kosowski – State Representative, former Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Westland

Brenda Jones – Small business owner
