Primary Election Overview: 38th House District

Through the primary election on August 2 on the MLC Blog we will highlight races for which the primary is the key race due to the voter base. Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

District Overview

The 38^th House district is located in southwest Michigan and includes portions of Allegan, Berrien, and Van Buren counties.

Commentary

The district is a near even split, with the Democratic base being just 51%, thus, both the primary and general elections will be important. While there isn’t an incumbent running in either primary, Kevin Whiteford, who is married to Representative Mary Whiteford, is running in the Republican primary. None of the candidates have experience being personally elected, but some have ties to politics through their careers.

Democratic Candidates:

- Joey Andrews – Attorney, policy analyst with the Michigan AFL-CIO
- Annie Brown – Small business owner, former South Haven School Board member, worked for Senator Gary Peters and former Senator Carl Levin.

Republican Candidate:

- George Lucas – Small business owner, realtor, worked in sales, management, and marketing.

- Kevin Whiteford
