Through the primary election on August 2 on the MLC Blog we will highlight races for which the primary is the key race due to the voter base. Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

District Overview

The 36^th House District is located in southwest Michigan and includes St. Joseph County and a portion of Cass County.

Commentary

This district has a 63% Republican base, making the primary race key in this election. Representative Steve Carra is running for his second term in office. First, he faces three candidates in the primary race, including a former local county commissioner. If he’s successful in the primary in August, he will likely win another term this November.

- Representative Steve Carra – State representative, former research association at the Action Institute.
- Jack Coleman – Navy veteran.
- Scott McGraw – Co-owner of local radio station, owned newspaper business, former Kalamazoo County Commissioner.
- Jerry Solis – Police officer, pastor, former youth pastor and missionary.
