Primary Election Overview: 31st House District

Through the primary election on August 2, on every Tuesday and Thursday on the MLC Blog we will be highlighting races for which the primary is the key race due to the voter base. Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

District Overview

The 31^st House District is in Macomb County and includes a portion of Clinton Township, Fraser and Mount Clemens. This district base is 58% Democratic, all but assuring the winner of the Democratic primary will easily win this November.

Commentary

State Representative Marilyn Lane (D-Fraser) is term limited from running for the seat, leaving it open. Democratic candidate William Sowerby has been a local elected official for twenty-seven years, providing a good amount of name recognition within Clinton Township. Additionally, he has gained some big endorsements.

Democratic Candidates:

Michael Brewington
William Sowerby – Former Clinton Township Treasurer and eighteen-year member on the township’s board of trustees.
- Endorsements – County Road Association of Michigan, Michigan League of Conservation Voters, Michigan AFL-CIO.

Republican Candidates:

Austin Negipe – Mortgage Consultant.
Lisa Valerio-Nowc – President of a nonprofit and librarian.
