Primary Election Overview: 2nd Michigan House District

Through the primary election on August 4 on the MLC Blog we will highlight races for which the primary is the key race due to the voter base. Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

District Overview:

The 2^nd House District is located in Wayne County and includes a portion of the City of Detroit, Grosse Point City, Grosse Pointe Farms, and Grosse Pointe Park.

Commentary:

The district has a 73% Democratic base, making the primary race the key to winning this seat. First term Representative Joe Tate is running for re-election. He currently serves on the House Appropriations Committee, and the Appropriations Subcommittees on General Government; Military, Veterans Affairs, and State Police; and School Aid and Education.

In 2016, President Trump received 21.12% of the vote and in 2018 Governor Whitmer received 75.53% of the vote.

Democratic Candidates:

- Taylor Harrell – Political director for a Detroit based non-profit, former Congressional staffer, former legislative aide and community coordinator in the Michigan House of Representatives
- Joe Tate – State Representative, former NFL player, Marine Veteran, former program manager for the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation.

Republicans Candidates:

- Mayra Rodriguez
