Primary Election Overview: 1st House District

Through the primary election on August 2 on the MLC Blog we will highlight races for which the primary is the key race due to the voter base. Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

District Overview

The 1^st Michigan House District is located in southeast Michigan in Wayne County. It includes River Rogue and a portion of the City of Detroit.

Commentary

Due to redistricting, Representatives Carter and Johnson were drawn into the same district. Both chose to remain in the same district and are running for their third term in the House. While there is a third candidate in their primary race, due to strong name ID, one of the incumbents is likely to win. The district has a strong 92% Democratic base, thus, whomever wins that primary is all but assured to win in November.

Democratic Candidates:

- Representative Tyrone Carter – State representative, retired law enforcement officer.
- Representative Cynthia Johnson – State representative, former corrections officer.
- Jermain Tobey – Gig worker, independent contractor.

Republican Candidate:

- Paula Campbell
