General Election Overview: 17th Senate District

Through the general election on November 6, the MLC Blog will be highlighting races generally considered swing seats, ones either party could win because of the voter base. Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

District Overview

The 17^th Senate District is located in Lenawee and Monroe Counties.

Commentary

Republican Senator Dale Zorn is running for a second term in the State Senate. While the district has a 59% Republican base, this has always been a hotly contested race. The district has a strong blue-collar and union worker voting block that can swing the district. President Trump won this district overwhelmingly 2-years ago carrying over 57% of the vote in both Lenawee and Monroe Counties.

Former State Representative, Bill LaVoy is looking to make a comeback to the state legislature after being upset 2 years ago. He is hoping his experience representing part of Monroe County will help deliver a win on Election Day.

Democratic Candidate:

Bill LaVoy – Former State Representative, former executive director of Monroe Public Access Cable Television.

Republican Candidate:

Dale Zorn – State Senator, former State Representative and Monroe County Commissioner, and owns an auto and truck service repair center.

Libertarian Candidate:

Chad McNamara
