Primary Election Overview: 11th Congressional District

Through the primary election on August 2 on the MLC Blog we will highlight races for which the primary is the key race due to the voter base. Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

District Overview

The 11^th Congressional District is located in southeast Michigan and incudes a portion of Oakland County. The district has a 57.6% Democratic base, matching the Democratic primary the one to watch in this seat.

Commentary

Congressman Levin and Congresswoman Stevens are both serving their second terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. Redistricting drew the two into the same districts and rather than moving to a different district, they’ve both decided to run against each other in the Democratic primary race. Both have garnered endorsements from fellow members of Congress, local elected officials, and key organizations. This primary race is shaping up to be one of the significant ones to watch this August.

Democratic Candidates:

- Congressman Andy Levin – Congressman, attorney, former acting director of the Michigan Department of Energy, Labor, and Economic Growth under Governor Granholm.
- Congresswoman Haley Stevens – Congresswoman, served several roles in the Obama administration, including chief of staff to the U.S. Auto Rescue Task Force, and worked in a manufacturing research lab.

Republican Candidate:

- Mark Ambrose
- Matthew DenOtter – Works in sales in the health care industry.
- Gabi Grossbard – Owned a small business, former auto executive, Medicare specialist, commercial real estate broker, and served on the Israeli Defense Forces.
