Through the primary election on August 2 on the MLC Blog we will highlight races for which the primary is the key race due to the voter base. Candidate’s website and professional information is listed when available.

District Overview

The 103^rd House District is located in northern portions of the Lower Peninsula. It includes Leelanau County and portions of Benzie and Grand Traverse Counties.

Commentary

Republicans have a very slight edge in this seat, with a 51.8% base. Representative O’Malley is running for a third term, facing a community activist in the primary race. Should he win in August, he will have another tough race in the general election in November.

Democratic Candidates:

- Michael Brodsky – Created a civic technology company, served on the Board of the Traverse City Downtown Development Authority.
- Betsy Coffia – Grand Traverse County Commissioner, consulting firm owner, former journalist.

Republican Candidates:

- Heather Cerone – Community activist.
- Representative Jack O’Malley – State representative, radio and TV broadcaster.
