This week, state agencies submitted their final Lake Erie Domestic Action Plan to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The plan is centered around Michigan’s strategies to improve water quality in Lake Erie and help reduce instances of harmful algal blooms.
The final plan provides a detailed implementation timeline and identifies how each agency will be reporting their progress. Additionally, it outlines three main goals that are consistent with the federal plan rolled out by the EPA, which are:
Michigan’s plan sets very specific actions that need to be taken to achieve a 40% phosphorus reduction goal, which was also established as a Michigan Water Strategy priority measure by Governor Rick Snyder. It includes continuing to tighten sewage treatment facility permits, targeting Michigan’s portion of the Maumee River and River Raisin watersheds for phosphorus reduction, increasing research on soluble reactive phosphorus, increase farmer technical assistance for best management practices, and continue outreach and education around Lake Erie.
The plan, which was jointly created by the Michigan departments of Environmental Quality, Agriculture and Rural Development, and Natural Resources, incorporated public comments received following the June 2017 release of the state’s draft plan.
