Plan to Amend Term Limits and Financial Disclosure Laws Announced

Mar 04, 2022

A coalition of well-known entities in Michigan announced their plan to amend the Michigan Constitution regarding term limit laws for those serving in the legislature. Their plan seeks to allow legislators to serve twelve total years, which could be fully served in one chamber or a combination of the two chambers. Currently, a person can serve three, two-year terms in the House and two, four-year terms in the Senate. This change would require a constitutional amendment and would need to be approved by Michigan voters this November. If the proposal form is approved by the Board of State Canvassers, they will need to get the required number of signatures of Michigan voters in order for it to make the general election ballot. The proposal also seeks to require annual financial disclosures for state elected officials. Those supporting the ballot proposal include the Michigan Chamber of Commerce, the Michigan State AFL-CIO, and Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan.
