Part 3 of Michigan’s Water Strategy Released

Last Friday the Michigan Office of the Great Lakes released the third part of the State's Water Strategy. The plan is aimed at protecting and the wise use of the state’s water resources. Governor Rick Snyder had previously called upon this Office to develop a thirty-year, eco-systems based plan to protect, manage, and restore the state’s water resources. The first part of the plan was released in June 10 and the second was released in July 27. The final portion of the strategy will be released this fall.

The third part of the strategy defines goals and actions for the protection of water quality, restoration of areas impacted by legacy pollution, investment in green and grey infrastructure and innovation in water technologies to improve drinking water and wastewater systems. Additionally, it details the need to educate the public about the benefits of well-maintained infrastructure, including clean beaches, delivery and treatment of safe drinking water, management of wastewater and storm water, healthy ecosystems and enhanced recreational and economic opportunities.

The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality also announced $158 million in low interest loans have been awarded to local municipalities to fund infrastructure projects to improve water quality and protect public health.
