Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Director Gary McDowell has named Sarah Lucas to lead the newly created Office of Rural Development, effective April 18. Governor Gretchen Whitmer established the office in January to focus on the strategic needs of rural Michigan, including economic and workforce development, infrastructure, public health, and environmental sustainability.
Prior to her appointment, Ms. Lucas served as the CEO of the Lake Superior Community Partnership. Additionally, she’s worked as the community development director for Networks Northwest, led the development of Housing North, and worked with the Western Upper Peninsula Planning and Development Region. She is a graduate of Eastern Michigan University and is currently an MPA candidate at Northern Michigan University.
