October Unemployment Rate Declines

Michigan’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate last month declined by two-tenths of a percentage point to 6.1%. Total employment for the month edged up by 6,000, while unemployment moved down by 7,000. Additional aspects of the monthly report include:

- Last month, Michigan recorded the second highest monthly job advance during 2021
- On a percentage basis, the leisure and hospitality sector exhibited the largest October gains in jobs, up by 1.8%
- October’s rate was 2.4% higher than February 2020’s pre-pandemic rate of 3.7%

The national unemployment rate also declined in October by two-tenths of a percentage point to 4.6%. The Detroit-Warren-Dearborn Metropolitan Statistical Area’s rate also declined by two-tenths of a percentage point in October to 5.8%. Employment in the region grew by 5,000, while unemployment was reduced by 4,000.
