Nearly One Billion Dollars Proposed for Parks and Recreation

Oct 29, 2021

A legislative package, investing hundreds of millions of dollars into the state’s recreation areas, was introduced this week. Appropriations within the bill package includes:

    • $508 million for the State Park Endowment Fund, enabling it to reach a funding cap that would otherwise not be reached for another 30 years
    • $250 million to address a backlog of infrastructure improvement projects at state and local parks and recreation areas
    • $150 million in a new Local Park Systems Grant Program to provide resources to local governments for the development or renovation of public recreation facilities and parks
    • $30 million to promote sports-related tourism and recreation in northern Michigan
    • $30 million for the Mackinac Island State Park Fund

Michigan’s outdoor recreation industry contributes billions to the state’s economy and sustains 126,000 jobs with over $4.7 billion in wages and salaries. The bills were referred to the Senate Appropriations Committee for consideration.
