Michigan’s Unemployment Rate Declines

Last month, the state’s seasonally adjusted jobless rate declined by three-tenths of a percentage point to 5.6%. During December, the number of employed increased by 16,000, while those unemployed decreased by 15,000. Despite the decline, December’s rate was two percentage points above the pre-pandemic February 2020 rate and total employment remained below pre-pandemic levels.

Additional highlights from the monthly report, include:

    • December 2021 was the eight consecutive month of employment advances.
    • Total payroll jobs advanced by 220,000 during 2021.
    • The most pronounced over-the-year industry job gains were seen in the leisure and hospitality sector and the professional and business services sector.

During December, the seasonally adjusted rate in the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn Metropolitan Statistical Area declined by 0.3% to 5.2%. Employment in the area grew by 15,000, while unemployment moved down by 6,000.
