Michigan’s Minimum Wage Increasing Next Month

Dec 03, 2021

On January 1, 2022, Michigan’s minimum wage will increase from $9.65 to $9.87. This is the next scheduled increase under the Improved Workforce Opportunity Wage Act of 2018. While the Act does prohibit a scheduled increase when the state’s annual average unemployment rate for the proceeding calendar year is above 8.5%, the Michigan Wage and House Division announced it is highly unlikely the state will exceed the threshold.

The full scope of change is as follows:

    • The state’s minimum wage will increase to $9.87/hour
    • The 85% rate for minors aged 16 and 17 increases to $8.39/hour
    • Tipped employees rates of pay increases to $3.75/hour
    • The training wage of $4.25/hour for newly hired employees ages 16 to 19 for their first 90 days of employment remains unchanged
