It was announced this week that Jay Wortley, Michigan’s Chief Economist, is retiring, effective February 28. Mr. Wortley has served in state government for thirty-six years, serving the last eighteen years in his current role. During his tenure as a state employee, he has participated in all fifty-three of the Consensus Revenue Estimating Conferences that have been held since the first one in 1992. He has concurrently served as the director of the Office of Revenue and Tax Analysis.
State Treasurer Nick Khouri announced the selection of Eric Bussis as the state’s new chief economist and director of the Office of Revenue and Tax Analysis. Mr. Bussis currently serves as the State Budget Office’s Project SIGMA Team Lead, which is responsible for implementing a new budgeting software system for state government. He previously held different lead budgeting and financial positions with the State of Indiana government. Before joining the Michigan State Budget Office in 2015, Mr. Bussis served as assistant director of the Indiana State Budget Agency. He has a bachelor’s degree in economics and social work from Indiana Wesleyan University and a master’s degree in economics from Indiana University-Indianapolis.
