Michigan: A State of Festivals

Aug 08, 2018

Summer time in Michigan signals festival season across the state. It starts with the spring Tulip Time Festival in Holland and hits its stride with the world-famous Cherry Festival in Traverse City over the 4th of July. The Cherry Festival attracts over 500,000 people and features performances such as air shows by the famous Navy-Blue Angels.

While Michigan may be known for some of its larger summer festivals, many communities across the state take great pride in local traditions and celebrate them with these annual festivities.

National Cereal Festival

Every year in June, Battle Creek hosts its annual Cereal Fest, created to celebrate the city as the birthplace of the cereal industry. This festival boasts the world’s longest breakfast table where you can try each of the many Kellogg cereal flavors.

Bologna Festival

The City of Yale, in St. Clair County, boasts an annual Bologna Festival in July. In a city of 2,000, it attracts 20,000 people to the festivities. The festival was born out a long-standing culinary tradition of making bologna, which Yale has been producing since 1906.

Old Town Scrap Fest

Lansing’s “Old Town” neighborhood boasts a scrap fest every summer.  Teams have one-hour to collect up to 500lbs of scrap metal from local scrap dealer Friedland Industries. The teams then have two-weeks to create an up-cycled masterpiece.

Mint Fest

Rural St. Johns Michigan hosts the annual mint festival each summer. The community north of Lansing has a tradition of growing mint dating back to the early 1900’s. Clinton County, where St. Johns is located, ranks first in mint production in Michigan with over 5,000 acres of mint farmed. 60,000 people flock to St. Johns to attend the numerous events this festival boasts.
