Last month, after winning a majority in the chamber, the Senate Democratic Caucus elected Senator Winnie Brinks to lead their caucus next term. Senator Brinks’ district is in Kent County on the west side of the state, including portions of Grand Rapids. During her first term in the Senate, she served on the Energy and Technology Committee, the Environmental Quality Committee, and as minority vice chair on the Health Policy and Human Services Committee.
Senator Brinks was first elected to the Senate in 2018 after serving three terms in the Michigan House of Representatives. Prior to that, she was a caseworker at The Source, where she helped businesses and nonprofits improve workplaces to grow and retain employees. She also previously served as the executive director of a community-based corrections agency and as a school paraprofessional. Senator Brinks holds a bachelor’s degree in Spanish with a concentration in sociology from Calvin College.
Senator Brinks and her husband live in Grand Rapids and are the parents of three daughters.
