On Thursday, MLC along with client, McDonald’s Corporate Government Affairs and the Michigan McDonald’s Government Association, organized an event at the State Capitol recognizing McDonald’s two billionth apple slices package served. Senator Goeff Hansen (R-Hart) honored McDonald’s franchise owner, Matthew Schulz and his wife Lori Schulz, in addition to Earl Peterson, owner of Peterson Farms and his daughter Sarah Schlukebir, vice president of sales and marketing. Peterson Farms is the largest apple supplier to McDonalds in Michigan and one of only six nationwide suppliers.
In 2004 McDonald’s became the first national restaurant chain to offer apple slice packages as a side choice for children. Since introducing apple slices, national apple consumption has increased by 355%. “McDonald’s plays an important role in the Michigan economy; they purchase over $164 million in products, including 19 million pounds of apples annually. Additionally, they add to the tax base, provide thousands of jobs, and play a primary role in local cities, townships, and municipalities throughout Michigan. MLC congratulates them on this huge accomplishment, they are truly making a difference in creating healthy choices for kids nationwide,” stated Brendan Ringlever of MLC.
