According to numbers released this week by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management, and Budget, the state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in May was 4.7%. This rate is one-tenth of a percentage point below April’s rate and eight-tenths of a percentage point below the May 2015 rate. Last month, both the labor force and the number of unemployed changed by 6,000, leaving the total employment number unchanged. With the decrease, the number of unemployed individuals declined to 227,000, which is the lowest the number has been since December 2000.
The May 2016 unemployment rate for the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn market decreased to 5.2%, a decline of four-tenths of a percentage point from the prior month and 1.1% lower than the May 2016 rate.
