March Unemployment Rate Declines

Michigan’s seasonally adjusted jobless rate last month declined by three-tenths of a percentage point to 4.4%. The total number of employed advanced by 29,000 during the month, while the number of unemployed fell by 14,000. The national rate declined by two-tenths of a percentage point in March to 3.6%.

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn Metropolitan Statistical Area also fell by three-tenths of a percentage point in March to 4.7%. Employment in the area grew by 11,000, while the number of unemployed decreased by 5,000.

Other key points from the monthly jobs report by the Department of Technology, Management, and Budget include:

    • Jobs rose last month for the 11th consecutive month
    • Most major industry sectors had employment hikes over the year, led by leisure and hospitality
    • Michigan’s average job count in the first quarter of 2022 was 43,000 above the prior quarter
