This week, the Career Pathway Alliance’s education recommendations were announced. Governor Rick Snyder was on hand for the announcement and spoke on the importance of better access to career pathways and supporting schools to enhance programs in order to close the talent gap. States across the country are struggling to fill openings in the professional trades and Michigan is no different. A key recommendation calls on the state to develop talent in order to become a talent leader in the nation.
During the budget process, the legislature included some of the objectives in the report, including increased funding for high school and at-risk students, a focus on competency-based learning, and more access to postsecondary learning. Additionally, State Superintendent Brian Whiston signed a directive this week setting some of the actions in place immediately. There are additional recommendations in the report that will require legislative action.
