Lt. Governor Presents Task Force Recommendations

Feb 12, 2016

This week, Lt. Governor Brian Calley presented the recommendations of the Special Education Reform Task Force to the State Board of Education.  The task force was created by Governor Rick Snyder in October of last year, with the Lt. Governor serving as the chair.  The group developed a strategic roadmap focused on five key areas in need of improvement and provided suggestions for personalizing and restructuring the state’s special education programs.  The five key areas are as follows; develop a more inclusive and transparent rulemaking process, improve access to, and the scope and quality of services, end the practice of restraint and seclusion, create a better problem-solving process, and lastly, support parents, guardians, and educators more with resources and options.  Each of the key areas have several recommendations and suggestions for implementing the main objectives.  The task force will work with the State Board of Education, the Michigan Department of Education, and the legislature to implement the recommendations.
