Legislature Repeals Prevailing Wage

Jun 08, 2018

This week, the House and Senate voted to repeal Michigan’s prevailing wage law. The voter initiated legislation was created through a ballot proposal. After proponents were determined to have collected enough of the required number of signatures, the voter initiated legislation headed to the legislature. After many floor statements, and some protests, both chambers voted in favor of the repeal. Because this is voter initiated legislation, Governor Rick Snyder can’t veto it. The Governor has stated in the past that he is in favor of keeping Michigan’s prevailing wage.

Michigan’s prevailing wage law was enacted over 50 years ago. The law required construction workers on state financed or sponsored construction projects must be paid and receive benefits in line with union scale wages, based on the region.

Those in favor of repealing the law stated that it would save taxpayer’s money and help fund road repairs and schools. However, those opposed believe it will lead to a less qualified work force and decreased workmanship.
