On Tuesday, the House and Senate voted to extend the state’s emergency declaration and gubernatorial emergency powers, however, for a shorter timeframe than what was in Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s Executive Order. In her order, the governor called for a 70-day extension, but the legislature voted for the extension to last through April 30.
Tuesday’s session was historic. The vast majority of members wore face masks, very few staffers were present on the floor, and in the House, members entered in shifts. Leadership was certain taking this vote was important, and as such put into place as many precautions as possible to keep everyone present safe, especially after two House members have been diagnosed with COVID-19.
