Next week, the legislature will be heading into its annual two-week in-district work period. Around the capitol you may hear staff, members, or lobbyists refer to it as “legislative spring break”. And while it overlaps with spring break for schools, for most legislators this is an important and busy time for them in their legislative districts.
For many of Michigan’s legislators, they live several hours from Michigan’s capital city and are not able to drive back to their districts during the legislature’s normal Tuesday – Thursday weekly schedule. Being gone in Lansing three to four days per week means district meetings and events are often missed by legislators. This two-week hiatus from regular session in Lansing allows members to fully re-engage with their districts.
For constituents and businesses, this is a great time period to engage with legislators, to talk with them about issues, give tours of local facilities, and help grow a legislator’s general understanding of issues impacting their local communities.
