Legislation to Increase Mental Health Care in Schools Introduced

Bicameral legislation was introduced to increase mental health care professionals in schools statewide. The proposal, introduced by Senator Curt VanderWall (R-Ludington) and Representative Bronna Kahle (R-Adrian), creates the Student Mental Health Apprenticeship for Retention and Training, or SMART program. The plan provides school counselors, school social workers, and school psychologists substantial tuition assistance for their commitment to remain within the district they service after completing specialized certifications and master’s level educational requirements. Senator VanderWall’s bill was referred to the Senate Health Policy and Human Services Committee for consideration and Representative Kahle’s legislation was referred to the House Health Policy Committee for consideration.
